About the museum
The museum is housed in the Cistercian convent of Santa Maria del Soccorso, known as La Badia, a 16th-century building enlarged and renovated between the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum occupies part of the ground floor and a large rectangular arcaded cloister, and is run by the Parco archeologico e paesaggistico della Valle dei Templi.
The display documents the presence of stable settlements in the territory of Licata and the lower Imera valley from the early Neolithic, in the 6th millennium BC, to Late Antiquity. The prehistory rooms present a selection of finds from the Neolithic to the Eneolithic and the Early Bronze Age, covering more than four thousand years of history.
The archaic and classical age is illustrated by the excavations of Mollarella and Casalicchio, where sanctuaries of Demeter and Kore stood, and by the fortified settlement of Poggio Marcato d'Agnone and that of Monte Sole. A large room is devoted to the Hellenistic city on Monte Sant'Angelo, identified with Finziade, founded in 282 BC by the tyrant Finzia; the last two rooms present House 1 of Finziade, with a reconstruction model and the small hoard (tesoretto) found inside it. The museum also has a collection of medieval art and some canvases from the convents suppressed in the 19th century.
