About the museum
The Museo delle Storie dalla Linea Gotica opened in 2024 in Castel d'Aiano, in the Apennines between the provinces of Bologna and Modena. In the winter and spring of 1945 the front stopped in this area, and some of the last battles to break through the Gothic Line were fought here; the Gothic Line was the last major German defensive line in northern Italy. The local stretch was known as the Green Line II; trenches, shelters and artillery positions still remain in the area.
The museum is run by the Associazione Storico Culturale Green Line II APS and is dedicated to American soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division and Brazilian soldiers of the Força Expedicionária Brasileira, to their descendants, to soldiers and families of all the nations that fought here, and to the civilians who lived alongside them.
The exhibition is built around personal objects and photographs, often accompanied by the stories of the people to whom they belonged. The association also collects testimonies, accompanies the descendants of soldiers to the battle sites, organises walks on the local network of paths, and offers educational activities for schools.
