About the museum
The Archivio Museo Cesare Mattei is run by an association that for more than twenty years has worked to recover, preserve, study and promote the legacy of Count Cesare Mattei, creator of electro-homeopathy and of the Rocchetta Mattei. It was founded in 2000 by the association’s committee in Riola di Vergato. Around 2010 it moved to I Fienili del Campiaro in Grizzana Morandi, and in 2022 it relocated to its current premises in Via Ponte, close to the Rocchetta.
It presents itself as the first and only museum in the world dedicated to electro-homeopathy, the therapeutic system widely used between the 19th and early 20th centuries. It collects documents and objects linked to Mattei, his remedies and the Rocchetta. Much of the original material was lost or destroyed, especially after the Second World War, which is why the museum continues to gather testimonies and relics.
Highlights include the Madonna Nera (Black Madonna), once in the Stanza del Papa of the Rocchetta, and the Madonna delle Rose, on loan from the parish of Riola. The museum accepts items through purchase after assessment, donation, transfer of ownership or a loan for reproduction.
