About the museum
The collection of anatomical specimens that forms the museum was begun at the end of the 19th century by Ettore Marchiafava and was housed in the Ospedale di Santo Spirito, where the medical faculty of the Sapienza carried out its activities. After the move to the present site of the university polyclinic, the original collection was almost entirely destroyed during the bombing of San Lorenzo in 1944.
Reconstruction began in 1950, thanks to Antonio Ascenzi. Since then the collection has been enriched with documentation of diseases that have changed over time or have recently emerged, such as AIDS.
Today the museum holds a large collection of pathological specimens from autopsies and surgery. The most comprehensive series concerns cardiovascular pathology, with about 900 congenital heart defects in natural history specimens. The museum is on the basement floor of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy, inside the Policlinico Umberto I.
