About the museum
The museum was founded by Sabatino Moscati and Sergio Donadoni within the Istituto del Vicino Oriente of the Sapienza, established in the 1960s. The university's archaeological missions in Turkey, Syria, Israel, Egypt, Sudan, Tunisia, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia and other countries brought a considerable quantity of material to Rome, granted for study, for replicas or as a sign of gratitude from the host countries.
The Egyptian collection was formed mainly by Donadoni during the rescue excavations linked to the Aswan Dam, including the recovery of the church of Sonqi Tino, the excavations at Antinoe and the work in the tomb of Sheshonq at Thebes. One room is dedicated to Ebla, with ceramic fragments, scale models and copies of cuneiform documents.
The current exhibition presents the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean in their autonomy and in their mutual relations. It keeps the division between the Near Eastern collection, with materials from Turkey, Palestine, Jordan, Israel, Malta, Tunisia, Pantelleria, Sicily and Sardinia, and the Egyptian collection, with works from Egypt and northern Sudan.
