About the museum
The Museo di Storia della Medicina of Sapienza University of Rome was founded in 1938 by Adalberto Pazzini. The current site, on the Città Universitaria campus, opened in 1954. The core of the collection comes from the opera singer Evan Gorga, whose collections were acquired in 1947.
The museum is spread over three floors and shows the development of Western medical thought from prehistory to modern genomics, with original objects and some reconstructions of period rooms.
The collections include pharmacy jars, albarelli and portable pharmacies from the 17th to the 19th century, surgical instruments, microscopes, alchemical and pharmaceutical glassware, a significant series of Roman votive offerings, the Sarnelli and Neuschuller collections, and finds related to embalming, on deposit from the Museo Egizio in Turin.
