About the museum
MACAM was founded in 1985 on the initiative of Maurizio Corgnati, a film director and writer born in Maglione, who wanted to return to his home village and create an open-air museum for his fellow villagers, so that they would grow in culture and learn to see beauty as part of everyday life. To lay the foundations of the museum, he invited the first twelve fresco painters, so that the works would last over time. The association is non-profit and has cultural aims.
At the time, Maglione was an agricultural village of about 500 inhabitants in the lower Canavese, at the meeting point of the provinces of Turin and Vercelli. The works (paintings, sculptures and installations) now number 166 and were realised with the support of public bodies, in particular the Piedmont Region. The artists, from various nationalities, come by direct invitation or through other artists, and engage with the rural landscape of the village.
The museum extends along the streets and alleys of the village: the whole village is the museum. From 1996 to 2011 a free fresco workshop for students of the Academies of Fine Arts was held, open to visitors. MACAM is part of the museum network of the Anfiteatro Morenico di Ivrea (Ivrea morainic amphitheatre).
