About the museum

A first nucleus of works was already gathered in 1926 by the parish priest Don Crescenzio Massari, who set up a room beside the pieve (parish church) of the Santi Pietro e Paolo to preserve the works of art recovered from the church storerooms. In 1979 the museum was first housed in the building in via Soccini known as “il Glorione”.

The move to the present seat, the Palazzo Ricci Socini, made it possible to enlarge the collection and present it better. The route, arranged in chronological order, begins on the second floor with 14th- and 15th-century panel paintings and is organised in seven rooms, plus one devoted to sacred vestments.

The works come from the churches of the Buonconvento area and, through their quality, attest to the close link of the district with Sienese painting. Among the artists represented are Duccio di Buoninsegna, Pietro Lorenzetti, Luca di Tommè, Andrea di Bartolo, Sano di Pietro, Matteo di Giovanni, Francesco Vanni and Rutilio Manetti; the collection also includes goldsmith’s work, such as censers and reliquaries, and wooden furnishings.
