About the museum

The museum is housed in the former Palazzo Vescovile, in the medieval village of Murlo, which overlooks the Crevole valley. It collects the Etruscan finds from the area, in particular those from the excavations of Poggio Civitate and from the necropolis of Poggio Aguzzo.

The excavations at Poggio Civitate began in the 1960s with an American archaeological mission, supported by Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli. A large representative building, the so-called palace, was identified there; it had two building phases: one in the Orientalising period (7th century BC) and one in the Archaic age (6th century BC).

The route develops over several floors. On the ground and first floors are displayed objects of everyday life, some also imported from other Etruscan cities and from Greece, and a section devoted to the craft workshops of the palace area, where pottery, bronze, ivory and bone were worked. On the second floor the roof is reconstructed with architectural terracottas, including the seated male acroterion known as the “Cappellone”, and with friezes depicting banquets, assemblies, processions and horse races. The third floor displays kitchen and table vessels, bucchero, small bronzes and grave goods. The museum also has a restoration laboratory and a programme of lectures, exhibitions and seminars.
