About the museum
The Musei riuniti di Montalcino are housed in the complex of the former Augustinian convent, in the heart of the village, next to the church of Sant'Agostino. They bring together the artistic heritage of the churches and institutions of the former diocese and of the town, gathered in a single route that opens from one of the cloisters.
The Museo civico e diocesano (Civic and Diocesan Museum) section holds Sienese gold-ground paintings, polychrome wooden statues, goldsmiths' work, miniatures and liturgical vestments, from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. Among the oldest works are the Bibbia Atlantica and a painted cross of the 12th century from the nearby abbey of Sant'Antimo.
In the basement rooms the Raccolta archeologica (Archaeological Collection) displays Etruscan, Roman and medieval finds from the area, including material from Poggio Civitella and from nearby tombs, and reconstructs the earliest origins of Montalcino. The complex also includes a multimedia experience devoted to Brunello and a refreshment area overlooking the cloister.
