About the museum
The MuSa opened in June 2015 in the Santa Giustina complex, comprising a church and a monastery, built from 1586 at the wish of Count Sebastiano Paride di Lodrone and entrusted to the Somascan Fathers, who carried out educational activity there from around 1670. Over the centuries the complex kept its role as an educational centre, even housing the Collegio civico and the gymnasium of the state schools.
The museum tells the story of Salò and its role as leader of the Comunità di Riviera, a confederation of thirty-four municipalities of the Garda riviera and the Valle Sabbia which, from 1426, was under Venice but enjoyed a certain autonomy. The route extends to the Garibaldian 19th century, to the Salò of Gabriele D’Annunzio and to the events of the Second World War, with the permanent section on the final phase of Fascism and the Italian Social Republic.
The collections include art collections, from the age of Salò as capital of the Riviera to the contemporary period; scientific collections with the meteoseismic observatory and the anatomical preparations of Dr Rini; the Duomo's graduals (liturgical choir books); the Museo del Nastro Azzurro, founded in 1949; and the Civico Museo Archeologico Anton Maria Mucchi, with finds from the Roman necropolis of Lugone. The museum is managed by the Fondazione Opera Pia Carità Laicale e Istituto Lodroniano.
