About the museum
The abbey of Aulla was founded in 884 by the Marquis of Tuscany Adalbert I and dedicated to Santa Maria Assunta; from 1050 it is recorded as dedicated to San Caprasio, a hermit of the Lérins islands, a unique case in Tuscany. The building has undergone profound transformations but retains the apse of the 10th century, while in the rooms of the canonry the great chapter house of the monastery has come back to light.
The museum is set up in this room and houses the finds of the recent archaeological excavations and the relics of San Caprasio, discovered in 2003 in a monumental tomb sealed between 1000 and 1050 and kept in a rare stucco reliquary. On display are stones, coins, ceramics, a fine portal, the 10th-century bell foundry and the so-called “Vangelo di Pietra” (Stone Gospel), as well as reconstructed figures of the abbot, the monk and the pilgrim in medieval dress.
The visit also includes the excavated presbytery area, where the foundations of the oldest churches, the remains of an early medieval building and a reused marble floor with a 1st-century BC inscription can be seen. The abbey is a parish, and along the Via Francigena it also offers a hostel for pilgrims.
