About the museum
The museum opened in 1998 in the rebuilt building of the former church of San Giovanni, founded in 1335–1336 and destroyed by the earthquake of 1920. The building also houses the Municipality’s council chamber.
The collections have two core groups: works from the former church and the Augustinian convent, and works gathered for protection from the churches and sacred buildings of the hamlets of Fivizzano. Among the works are the San Nicola da Tolentino by Zanobi Machiavelli, from the mid-15th century, and the funerary monument of Leonardo Valazzana, attributed to the circle of Jacopo Sansovino.
Also preserved are Tuscan-school silver chalices, illuminated antiphonaries of the 14th century, Renaissance wooden busts, Baroque candlesticks, sacred vestments, an Annunciation by Stefano Lemmi and a small group of works by Andrea Guardi.
