About the museum
The Museum of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Padua was founded in the mid-1990s and is one of the university's youngest museums. It belongs to the Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science and is located on the Agripolis campus in Legnaro.
Some of the collections date back to the zooiatric cabinet of Padua (gabinetto zooiatrico patavino), which was active between 1774 and 1873 and was founded by the veterinarian Giuseppe Orus. The museum tells the story and evolution of veterinary medicine in Padua and the techniques used to prepare the specimens.
The collections include skeletons of domestic animals such as dogs, cats, cattle and horses, and of wild land and marine animals such as deer, tigers, turtles and dolphins. A further collection is devoted to pathological osteological preparations, while a small collection of plastinated preparations documents normal and pathological anatomy.
The collections are used for teaching and research, and the museum offers interactive guided tours with tactile experiences, workshops for schools and science outreach projects.
