About the museum
The museum was founded in 1964 at the wish of Bishop Anacleto Cazzaniga and the Metropolitan Chapter. It takes its name from the Albani family, patrons of Urbino Cathedral and in particular of Pope Clement XI (1700–1721). It is housed in the Episcopal Palace, beside the Duomo.
The new display, covering about 600 square metres, was inaugurated on 20 March 2010 during the episcopate of Mons. Francesco Marinelli. The route is organized chronologically in seven rooms, plus the Old Sacristy and the New Sacristy, and includes a visit to the Cathedral and the Oratory of the Grotto.
The collections, which come from the territory of the Archdiocese of Urbino-Urbania-Sant’Angelo in Vado, bring together around 200 objects: illuminated codices, chalices and reliquaries in filigree and enamel, majolica and porcelain, ivories and liturgical vestments. Among the best-known pieces are the brass lectern from the library of Federico da Montefeltro, a bronze candelabrum by Francesco di Giorgio Martini, detached frescoes in a late Gothic style, and paintings by Giovanni Santi, Federico Barocci and Federico Zuccari.
