Casa natale di Raffaello

House museum in Urbino where Raphael was born in 1483, with the Madonna di Casa Santi, Renaissance ceramics and the workshop of his father Giovanni.

About the museum

The house, of 14th-century origin, was bought in 1460 by the painter and poet Giovanni Santi, Raphael’s father. Here Raphael was born on Good Friday of 1483 and spent the first years of his training in his father’s workshop. After Giovanni’s death the building passed to the heirs and was divided; in 1635 the architect Muzio Oddi of Urbino, who lived next door, bought the part traditionally considered Raphael’s birthplace, joined it to his own house, and had the Latin inscription that is still visible on the façade put up.

In 1873 the building became the seat of the Accademia Raffaello, founded in 1869, which still owns and looks after it. Thanks to a public subscription and a contribution from John Morris Moore, the house has over time been enriched with paintings, sculptures, ceramics, furnishings and portraits of illustrious people from Urbino, as well as copies of works by Raphael and tributes from other artists.

The first floor is set up as a period house museum. In the room traditionally indicated as the birthplace the Madonna di Casa Santi, attributed to the young Raphael, is displayed. The visit is completed by the courtyard with the well, the workshop on the ground floor, a drawing by Raphael, Renaissance ceramics from Urbino and, on the second floor, copies of his paintings with documents on the history of the Accademia.
