About the museum
The Museo di Arte religiosa alpina di Novalesa (Museum of Alpine Religious Art) is part of the Sistema Museale Diocesano (Diocesan Museum System) of the Susa Valley and occupies the chapel of the Confraternity of the Blessed Sacrament and the parish church of Santo Stefano. It collects the most valuable sacred works from the Alpine basin of Novalesa, which has always been an important stage on the routes between northern and southern Europe.
The collections span various periods, from the Roman era to the Lombard, Carolingian and Napoleonic periods, and include a Late Antique find, sculpture, paintings and textiles. The parish church houses canvases from the schools of Caravaggio, Rubens and Le Moyne, as well as a work by Daniele da Volterra, moved at Napoleon's wish from Paris to the hospice of Moncenisio and from there to Novalesa.
The most precious piece is the reliquary urn of Sant'Eldrado, abbot of Novalesa in the 9th century, the work of a 12th-century Rhenish-Mosan silversmith, with many similarities to objects preserved at Saint-Maurice d'Agaune, in the Valais.
