About the museum

The Museo Diocesano di Susa is the central seat and coordination hub of the Sistema Museale Diocesano (Diocesan Museum System), which consists of five venues: besides Susa, the alpine religious art museums of Melezet (Bardonecchia), Novalesa and Giaglione, and the Chapel of San Lorenzo in San Giorio. The choice of a network of venues arose from the wish to enhance the artworks of the valley without taking the heritage away from local communities. The system is run by the Centro Culturale Diocesano (Diocesan Cultural Centre), active in the Susa Valley since 2000.

The seat is located in the building complex adjoining the ancient church of the Madonna del Ponte. The collections include works dating from the 6th to the 20th century, belonging to the Treasury of the cathedral of San Giusto, the Treasury of the church of the Madonna del Ponte and various places in the valley: paintings, wooden sculptures, goldsmiths' work, textiles, liturgical furnishings and a precious collection of vestments.

Among the most valuable works are the Triptych of the Rocciamelone (1358), the Madonna del Ponte (12th century) and the processional cross by Johannes Bos (around 1360). The route makes it possible to follow the evolution of the figurative culture of the area from the Middle Ages to the modern era.
