About the museum
The museum combines the archaeological heritage with the historical and artistic heritage of Casole d'Elsa. It is housed in the rooms of the canonry, beside the Collegiata of Santa Maria Assunta, the heart of the small town, and the route ends in the Collegiata itself.
The archaeological section holds a marble statue head from the 19th-century collection of the Marquis Bargagli and two bronze clasps with a boxing scene, which attest to the economic and cultural vitality of the area in the Archaic Etruscan period; the numerous Hellenistic grave goods from the Orli necropolis show that Casole belonged to the political and cultural sphere of Volterra.
The art history section includes two groups of works by the painters Alessandro Casolani (1552/1553–1607) and Augusto Bastianini (1875–1938), born in Mensano and Monteguidi, as well as late medieval and Renaissance works, including a fresco by Giacomo Pacchiarotti. In the Collegiata stand out the 14th-century funerary monuments of Messer Porrina, by Marco Romano, and of Bishop Tommaso Andrei, by Gano di Fazio, an altarpiece by Giovanni della Robbia and a canvas by Rutilio Manetti.
