About the museum
The diocesan museum is housed in the Vescovado Vecchio (Old Bishop’s Palace) of Feltre, a building that began as a fortress and was later enlarged until it became the residence of the city’s bishops. From the second half of the 13th century the bishops lived there, and the diocese’s administrative offices were also located in the palace; the building is known for its frescoes and decorated ceilings.
The collections, which belong to the diocese of Belluno-Feltre, document sacred art from the early Middle Ages to the present day through paintings, sculptures, goldsmith’s works and textiles from the territories of the ancient dioceses of Feltre and Belluno.
Among the most important pieces are the chalice of the deacon Orso, datable to the 6th century, a post-Byzantine cross of 1542, a 15th-century alabaster Madonna and the reliquary bust of Saint Silvester by the Florentine goldsmith Antonio di Salvi. There are also works by Jacopo Tintoretto, Sebastiano Ricci, Luca Giordano and Gaspare Diziani.
