About the museum
The Museo Casa De Gasperi has been open to the public since 2006 and is housed in the birthplace of Alcide De Gasperi in Pieve Tesino, a small village on the Tesino plateau, at almost 900 metres above sea level, on the edge of what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It is run by the Fondazione Trentina Alcide De Gasperi.
The museum is not a collection of relics but, in the intentions of its promoters, a “museo di idee” (museum of ideas): the statesman's life is told through sounds, images and a few objects and documents, with the aim of conveying the values that guided the man and the politician from the small Trentino village to the threshold of a united Europe.
The exhibition route is conceived as a journey that symbolically took De Gasperi from Trentino to Europe. It begins on the ground floor with a train; on the first floor the phase lived under the Habsburg Empire is retraced, with the years of his education and his entry into politics; the second floor is devoted to the interwar years in the Kingdom of Italy, marked by Fascism; the third floor tells of the De Gasperi of the Republic and of the first steps towards the union of the European countries. The visit ends in the birthplace room. Ten minutes on foot from the museum is the Giardino d'Europa, dedicated to De Gasperi and to a united Europe.
