About the museum
The Ugento diocesan museum preserves evidence of the history of the diocese, documented since 1198, and works of art from the cathedral and other churches in the diocesan territory.
The museum is housed in the burial undercroft of the cathedral. These spaces, which in the 17th century served as a place of burial, were later restored and fitted out for display.
The collections include silver chalices, parchment missals, papier-mâché statues of saints from the Salento region, portraits of the bishops who led the diocese, as well as ceramics, sculptures, textiles and books. Some sources also mention Messapian finds discovered in the countryside around Ugento and a collection of Renaissance paintings and sculptures.
