About the museum

The Museo diocesano di Vicenza was founded in 2005 and occupies part of the Palazzo Vescovile, near the Duomo, a building of 13th-century origin rebuilt after the bombing of the Second World War. The display follows a chronological order, with some thematic rooms, such as the one devoted to the Fondazione Pietro Nonis.

The route opens with the archaeological section, which includes finds from early Christianity, stone fragments, liturgical furnishings and the large marble baptismal basin from the Cathedral. Then follow the ethnographic section, with objects from various civilisations, above all African, including Ethiopian crosses, and the sacred vestments, among which stands out the Piviale dei Pappagalli (Parrots’ Cope), one of the oldest in Europe.

On the first floor paintings are displayed in chronological order from the 15th to the 18th century, with works by Alessandro Maganza, Gerolamo Bassano and Francesco Maffei. The Loggia Zeno holds a collection of sacred goldsmith’s work; among the best-known pieces are the Gioiello di Vicenza (Jewel of Vicenza), a silver and wood model of the city, and the reliquary of the Sacra Spina (Holy Thorn).
