About the museum

The Museo diocesano sorrentino-stabiese has its main seat in Castellammare di Stabia, in Piazza Giovanni XXIII, opposite Palazzo Farnese, in the Church of the Oratory, a building that recalls the presence of the Benedictines and Franciscans. A second site is being set up in Vico Equense, at the former cathedral of the Annunziata.

The collection largely arose from finds from a Roman necropolis that emerged during work on the cathedral between 1875 and 1879. The materials show that the burial ground extended along the road linking Nuceria, Stabiae and Surrentum, and that it remained in use until late antiquity and the first Christian centuries.

The route presents capitals, oil lamps, funerary slabs and a complete column, the tomb slab of Caio Longinio Prisco reused as a Christian tomb, a 3rd-century sarcophagus of the Principalis di Miseno, the Good Shepherd sarcophagus and a milestone set up by the emperor Hadrian in 121 AD.
