About the museum
The museum is housed in the Reggia di Quisisana, a building on the hills of Castellammare di Stabia with a history of more than seven centuries, enhanced especially in the Bourbon period. Since 2020 the seat has housed the archaeological collection devoted to ancient Stabiae, named after Libero D'Orsi, the archaeologist who from 1950 directed the excavations of the villas of Varano.
Stabiae was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, but it had a new life just a few years later, as the poet Statius recalls. The seaside villas of otium and the rustic villas of the territory, excavated first in the Bourbon period and then in the 20th century, have yielded decorative furnishings and everyday objects.
The route has been renewed with multimedia displays and brings together Stabian finds held in different institutions, including on loan from the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and from the Diocesan Museum of Castellammare.
