About the museum
The Museo Erbario of the Sapienza Università di Roma was established in 1872 on the initiative of the botanist Giuseppe De Notaris, initially in the former convent of San Lorenzo in Panisperna. The collection grew over time through purchases and the acquisition of private collections, such as those of Ettore Rolli and Vincenzo Cesati.
The Cesati herbarium, with more than 350,000 specimens, is considered the most important historic collection. In total the museum holds about one million dried plants and documents plant biodiversity. It also keeps the historical registers of the Regio Istituto e Orto Botanico di Roma (Royal Institute and Botanical Garden of Rome), which record exchanges with botanical gardens around the world. In 2019 the personal herbarium of Edda Lattanzi, of about 16,000 specimens, was acquired.
Today the museum is on the second floor of the Botany building of the Department of Environmental Biology, in the Città Universitaria (university campus).
