About the museum

The museum is the Popiglio section of the Pistoia diocesan museum and is run by the Ecomuseo della Montagna Pistoiese, which includes it in the Sacred Art itinerary. The route is spread over two sites: the sacristy of the pieve of Santa Maria Assunta and the oratory of the Compagnia del Corpus Domini, also known as the chapel of the Compagnia del Santissimo Sacramento.

The pieve, of Romanesque origin and documented from 1271, was enriched in the 16th and 17th centuries with Baroque works from the Roman milieu, donated as ex-votos by the Vannini family, originally from Popiglio but living in Rome. There are paintings by Sebastiano Vini and Giacinto Gimignani, sculptures, goldsmiths' work and a 17th-century organ by Giuseppe Testa.

In the chapel are gathered sacred vestments from all over the Montagna Pistoiese, silverware and liturgical furnishings that document local devotion and history. Nearby, in via delle Corti, the Sacred Art educational centre offers weaving workshops for children with small looms.
