About the museum
The museum is part of the Istituto Storico dei Cappuccini, a research institution on Franciscanism and in particular on the 16th-century Capuchin reform. The Institute was founded in Assisi on 14 November 1930, moved to Rome in 1940 and since summer 1968 has been located along the Grande Raccordo Anulare, at kilometre 65.050, where the General Archive, the Order’s central library and the Collegio Internazionale San Lorenzo da Brindisi are also based.
The purpose of founding the museum was to collect and document Franciscan history and art through objects and images of every kind, starting with the iconography of Saint Francis of Assisi and then of the saints, blesseds and the most significant Franciscan figures.
The collection includes sculptures, drawings, engravings, prints, illuminated codices, ceramics and medals. Among the oldest pieces is a 13th-century panel with a gold background, by a Tuscan or Lazio master, showing Saint Francis and the Rule. By ministerial decree of 15 September 1965, the museum was entered among the non-state museums as a minor museum, diocesan or religious, in the category of specialist museums.
