About the museum
The Museo delle Civiltà was created in 2016 from the merger of four Roman state institutions: the Museo Preistorico Etnografico “Luigi Pigorini”, the Museo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari, the Museo dell'Alto Medioevo and the Museo d'Arte Orientale “Giuseppe Tucci”. The collections, very different in origin, have been brought together to offer a unified account of the world's cultures, from prehistory to Italian folk traditions.
The seat is the EUR district, designed for the Universal Exhibition planned for 1942: the Palazzo delle Scienze, in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, houses the ticket office and the prehistoric and ethnographic collections, while the nearby Palazzo delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari hosts the sections devoted to Italian folk culture.
The route includes archaeological finds, objects from Africa, Oceania and the Americas, Early Medieval materials and demo-ethno-anthropological collections. One part of the museum, the room dedicated to the Grotta Guattari, is currently closed for extraordinary maintenance works.
