About the museum
The museum is housed in a former 19th-century lime kiln with three furnaces, at the foot of Monte Cinto in the Euganean Hills (Colli Euganei). The kiln bears witness to the lime production once widespread in this area; the limestone was quarried and processed here until 1974.
In the same year, a major deposit of fossil fish from the Late Cretaceous was discovered in the nearby quarry. After careful restoration, the plant was converted into a geopalaeontological museum. Today it is also the starting point of the Monte Cinto trail.
The route displays fossils found in the quarry and, outside, a geological park with rock samples and life-size reproductions of dinosaurs, including Allosaurus, Apatosaurus and Hadrosaurus. Guided tours explain the stages of lime production and the tools used to work the stone; educational routes of various levels are offered for schools.
