About the museum

The museum is run by the GAMPS, the Gruppo AVIS Mineralogia e Paleontologia di Scandicci, a non-profit volunteer association that for more than twenty-eight years has collected, protected and promoted mineralogical and palaeontological finds from the Tuscan area. The site is in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, in the hamlet of Badia a Settimo.

The mineralogical collection occupies more than eleven display cases with minerals of every order and class and illustrates their uses, from everyday life to industry. In 2006 the museum received as a gift the Pellegatta collection, of about 700 specimens from around the world. The palaeontological collection includes well-preserved and prepared fossils; among the best-known pieces are the fossil whale of Castelfiorentino, considered the most complete in Europe, the dugong of Grosseto and the dolphin of Lucciola Bella (Pienza).

In 2021 an area with fossils and luminescent minerals, viewable under UV lamps, was set up. The museum offers free guided visits for schools, summer and winter camps, themed birthday parties and the exhibition “PaleoPlastica – I fossili del futuro” (PaleoPlastica – The Fossils of the Future).
