About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Guido Chidichimo (Alessandria del Carretto 1912 – Rome 1998), the first Italian physician to perform open-heart cardiac surgery. Over his career he carried out tens of thousands of operations and wrote some two hundred and fifty scientific publications in surgery and cardiovascular medicine.
Chidichimo left his birthplace the furnishings of his Rome study and all the cultural and scientific material it contained. After his death the municipal administration set up the museum, which stands near the botanical garden.
The route presents a reconstruction of the study with some specialist surgical instruments, his personal library, paintings, certificates, awards and trophies, together with books, films of open-heart operations and slides gathered over many years of activity. The building is also designed for study, research, teaching and medical days at various levels.
