About the museum
The museum is housed in Villa Cattolica, an 18th-century villa on the outskirts of Bagheria. In 1973, after Renato Guttuso donated works to his birthplace, the Municipality bought part of the building and set up the civic museum on the piano nobile; in 1984 it acquired the entire villa, devoting the whole of it to the museum.
On the first floor are around one hundred permanent works by Guttuso documenting his life and career. The second floor houses photographs, sketches and drawings of Sicilian life and landscape, together with works by other 20th-century artists such as Cagli, Schifano and Pina Calì. The ground floor includes an ethnographic section with decorated Sicilian carts and a collection of over 400 film posters.
In the villa's garden, since 1990, the painter's remains rest in a monumental tomb designed by his friend, the sculptor Giacomo Manzù.
