About the museum
The Museo di zoologia “Pietro Doderlein” of the University of Palermo dates back to the second half of the 19th century and is named after the naturalist who founded it. It is located in via Archirafi, in the university complex in the city centre.
The collections preserve several thousand specimens of invertebrates and vertebrates. Among the holdings, the collection of Mediterranean fishes stands out, preserved using a chemical treatment described as a secret.
The museum is also a centre for the study and conservation of Sicilian and Mediterranean zoological material, and offers visits to the public, including animated tours for children and young people.
