About the museum
The museum was inaugurated on 22 December 2005 on the initiative of the cultural centre “Maria d'Enghien”, with the aim of making known the history of Taranto and in particular the era of the Principality, which began at the end of the 11th century. Princess Maria d'Enghien married Ladislaus of Durazzo, King of Naples, in 1407 and became queen.
The display occupies the underground rooms of an 18th-century noble palace in the Old Town, which grew out of medieval buildings around a central courtyard. Spread over about 400 m² and several levels, with walls of carparo stone, the route reconstructs scenes of domestic, productive and military life of the period, with faithfully reproduced materials and craft workshops for ironwork and leatherwork.
