About the museum
The Taranto diocesan museum, also known as MuDi, is housed in the building that hosted the archiepiscopal seminary from 1568 to 1965, in the heart of the old town. It is a block built around a courtyard closed on four sides, which allows a double reading of the visit: the architecture and uses of the seminary on one hand, the collections on the other.
The display is spread over four levels. On the underground floor the remains of an ancient Iapygian village are visible. The ground floor holds the reception services, an auditorium, a multi-purpose hall and the liturgical section, set up in the former chapel. The first and second floors house the thematic sections, devoted to the liturgy, Christ, the Virgin, the saints, religious orders and confraternities, the cathedral and the archbishops.
The more than 300 works span from the 7th to the 20th century and include sacred furnishings, relics, paintings and sculptures, largely from churches no longer in use or from the archdiocese's heritage. Among the main pieces are the treasure of San Cataldo, including the gold cross found on the saint's chest during excavations of the cathedral, and ancient reliquaries. The collection has recently been enriched with contemporary canvases on religious subjects donated by Archbishop Benigno Papa.
