About the museum
The museum-monument was inaugurated in 1973 on the ground floor of the Palazzo dei Pio, in the historic centre of Carpi. In the mid-1950s the municipal administration, led by the first mayor, Bruno Losi, had set up a committee to commemorate the deportees; the project was entrusted to the BBPR studio (Belgiojoso, Banfi, Peressutti, Rogers) in collaboration with Renato Guttuso. It stands not far from the remains of the Fossoli transit camp, active between 1943 and 1944.
The route is made up of thirteen bare rooms, on whose walls there are graffiti by Picasso, Longoni, Léger, Cagli and Guttuso. Objects and photographs were arranged by Lica and Albe Steiner, while the phrases taken from the letters of Resistance fighters condemned to death were chosen by Nelo Risi. There are also objects and letters of the deportees, and about 150 works by the painter Aldo Carpi, donated in 1999.
The last room, the Sala dei nomi (Room of Names), bears on its walls the names of about 14,000 Italian deportees. In the external courtyard, sixteen concrete steles six metres high, tilted in different directions like a labyrinth, bear the names of the concentration camps. The museum is run by the Fondazione Fossoli and can be visited together with the former Fossoli camp.
