About the museum
The Museo dell'automobile in San Martino in Rio grew out of the historic car collection of Domenico Gentili, to which the pieces of Emilio “Barighin” Storchi Fermi were added. The first vehicles from the 1920s and 1930s reached the village in 1956. The museum was established in 1966, when the Municipality made available a shed of about 1,000 square metres, and the collection moved there with around a hundred cars, motorcycles, bicycles, carriages and carts.
After Storchi Fermi's sudden death in 1975, the museum shrank and some pieces went to the Modena area. His heirs and Vittorio Vincenzi kept the initiative alive, and in 1981 members took over the space left empty by a workshop, starting its revival. In the 1960s and 1970s the museum was a reference point for historic motoring, and from 1958 to 1975 it housed the first car built by Enzo Ferrari, the Auto Avio Costruzioni 815.
Today the collection, in a shed of about 650 m², includes over forty cars, around ten motorcycles, vintage bicycles and accessories that illustrate the evolution of mobility from the early 20th century to the 1980s. The Scuderia San Martino, linked to the museum, restores and maintains many of the vehicles and takes them to historic car events.
