About the museum
The museum is housed in the Palazzo dei Principi, a building constructed between the late 15th century and 1508 as the residence of Francesca of Brandenburg, widow of Count Borso da Correggio, and of her children. After the end of the principality the palazzo was for more than two centuries the seat of the Este governor; in the 19th century it fell into decline and was used for various purposes, until the 20th-century restorations of 1925 and 1966.
The civic collection grew around the surviving Flemish tapestries of Brussels manufacture, to which were added in 1813 portraits of illustrious people from Correggio donated by their families, prints by local artists and a large collection of copies after the works of Correggio. The Museo civico opened in 1995, closed in 1996 after the October earthquake, and reopened in 2004 on the first floor of the palazzo.
The rooms follow a chronological order: in the courtyard a Roman funerary lion introduces the room on archaeology and the territory; the visitor then passes to the Sala del Camino (Fireplace Room), the Galleria del Cinquecento (16th-century gallery) with the Salone degli Arazzi (Tapestry Hall), the rooms of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, and the Galleria Asioli. The collection also includes the coins of the Correggio mint (1569–1630). The palazzo also houses the municipal library and the historical archive.
