About the museum
The diocesan museum is housed in the church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola, built by the Jesuits between 1670 and 1682 and later belonging to the episcopal seminary. It is named after Cardinal Rodolfo Pio di Savoia, a churchman of the Counter-Reformation era, scholar and collector, and was inaugurated on 17 May 2008.
The works come from churches in the diocese and were kept in the Museo civico until 1998; in 1999 the Ministry for Cultural Heritage returned them to the Diocese of Carpi, which set them up in the new site. After closing because of the 2012 earthquake, the museum reopened on 5 May 2019.
The route occupies the church, left intact with its furnishings and altarpieces, and two former sacristies. On display are liturgical furnishings and vessels, silverware from the 16th to the 20th century, paintings, prints, sculptures, textiles and scagliola. Outstanding are the cathedral antiphonaries made by Damiano Gafori between 1515 and 1534, the reliquaries from the workshop of Bartolomeo Spani, 15th-century terracotta sculptures of Tuscan origin, and 17th- and 18th-century Emilian paintings.
