About the museum

The Museo Muratoriano is housed in the Aedes Muratoriana, the house attached to the church of Santa Maria della Pomposa in the centre of Modena, where Lodovico Antonio Muratori carried out his daily work as a parish priest and scholar. From 1716 he was provost of the church, which he had rebuilt starting in 1717.

In 1931 the municipal administration granted the house to the Deputazione di storia patria (regional history society), which set up its headquarters there and organised the museum and library. From 1952 the Aedes also houses the Centro di studi muratoriani, which oversees the national edition of the scholar’s correspondence.

The museum, opened in 1931, displays relics of Muratori as writer, historian, adviser and ducal librarian: autograph documents and personal objects such as his walking stick, inkwell, desk and librarian’s armchair, the wall clock, the crucifix given to him by Paolo Segneri, the prie-dieu and the baptismal font. The route is completed by a rich selection of portraits in painting and prints.
