About the museum
The Ecomuseo delle Rocche del Roero is an open-air museum dedicated to the landscape of the Rocche, an erosion phenomenon that has carved canyons more than a hundred metres deep into the sandy hills of the Roero. About 250,000 years ago the capture of the Paleo-Tanaro by a watercourse from the Alba area changed the course of the river and set off the erosion that shaped the spires, natural amphitheatres and gullies. In the sandy walls, once the sea floor, fossil shells, sea urchins and fish can still be found.
The ecomuseum has set up a network of waymarked trails in the Roero, a short distance from Alba and the Langhe, which allows visitors to get to know the landscape, traditions, work and products of the area. The network comprises more than 300 km of routes for trekking, mountain biking and running, with eighteen themed circular trails, each with an audio guide, and some major multi-day tours.
Since 2003 the ecomuseum has run educational activities for teachers and classes, with workshops and teaching itineraries, and has published the “Quaderni dell'Ecomuseo”, produced by children. The Montà site, in the former sawmill, also functions as a tourist office, where visitors can find the map of the trail network and information on guided walks.
