About the museum
The Museo naturalistico territoriale is located inside the Castello Savelli Torlonia, in the historic centre of Palombara Sabina, and forms part of the castle’s visitor route, which houses a natural history and archaeological museum. The fortress is already mentioned in a document of 1064, and in 1250 it passed to Luca Savelli, nephew of Pope Honorius III. Between the 13th and 14th centuries it was extended around the medieval watchtower: with about 132 rooms over 10,000 square metres, it is considered the largest castle in Lazio. The interior frescoes, commissioned by Troilo Savelli, are attributed to Baldassarre Peruzzi.
The castle has been owned by the municipality since the early 1970s. The guided tours, lasting about 45 minutes and including moments of historical re-enactment, are organised by the association “I Castellani” and must be booked in advance via the castle’s website.
