About the museum

The museum was built in 1905 to a design by the architect Giulio De Angelis, to house in a dedicated building the Garibaldian relics of the combatants of the 1867 campaign for the liberation of the Agro Romano (Roman countryside), in particular of the battle of Mentana on 3 November 1867.

Many objects were donated by the volunteers who had fought with Garibaldi; others were found by local farmers, such as bayonets, parts of weapons and bullets. The collection comprises about 534 items, arranged in three main groups: weapons, textiles and medals. A paper section includes medal diplomas, honours and Garibaldian certificates, letters from prisoners and photographs.

In 2017 the museum was renovated with a new visit route and a multimedia wing, where an account of the battle, with sound and light, accompanies visitors. A short distance away are the Parco della Rimembranza and the Ara-Ossario, which commemorates the fallen volunteers.
