About the museum
The Museo Navale Romano of Albenga was founded in 1950 and is housed in Palazzo Peloso Cepolla, a 17th-century building in the historic centre. It is linked to the archaeologist Nino Lamboglia, who led the recovery of the Roman ship sunk off Albenga, about one mile from the coast and at a depth of 42 metres. The recovery began in 1950 and was followed by thirteen underwater campaigns.
The wreck is considered the largest known Roman cargo ship in the Mediterranean: it carried more than ten thousand amphorae of Campanian wine bound for southern France and Spain, and sank around 100–90 BC. Part of the amphorae is displayed on a wooden rack that reproduces the hold.
The route also includes materials from the wreck of Diano Marina, with large terracotta containers called doliola, and, since 1957, about one hundred ceramic vases from Savona and Albisola of the 17th–19th centuries from the old pharmacy (spezieria) of the Albenga hospital. Since 2002 there has been a section on the prehistory of the Val Pennavaira. A new display, curated by the Istituto Internazionale di Studi Liguri, the Soprintendenza and the Comune, was presented in 2023.
