About the museum
Villa San Martino was a country residence that Napoleon bought in 1814 during his exile on the island of Elba, but he never lived in it. It later passed to Prince Anatolio Demidoff, who had the neoclassical Galleria built and had no interest in turning it into a Napoleonic museum.
Today the villa is part of the Museo nazionale delle residenze napoleoniche, together with the Palazzina dei Mulini, and recalls Napoleon’s stay on the island from 4 May 1814 to 26 February 1815. The museum holds period furnishings, the famous Egyptian Room and a collection of 19th-century prints, partly on display.
The park was transformed to a design by Adolfo Coppedè and is currently closed to the public for restoration work.
