About the museum
The museum opened in 1996 with the collection of Fortunato Orazio Signorello and is run by the Accademia Federiciana. It is located on the ground floor of the Palazzina Minio, in the Academy's seat, a few steps from piazza Cavour in Catania. The journalist Salvatore Nicolosi took part in the opening ceremony.
The collection numbers more than two thousand animal and plant specimens, largely shells, fish and bones of extinct animals, coming from five continents and dating from the Silurian to the Neozoic, with particular attention to the Lower Jurassic and the Cenozoic. Among the finds are ammonites, trilobites, shark teeth, ferns, insects preserved in amber and vertebrate remains; a dinosaur egg (Dendroolithus sp.) from China is also on display.
Some specimens have been studied and described in scientific publications. The museum is cited in the guide “I luoghi della scienza” (Places of Science) and in the directory of Italian earth science museums.
