About the museum
The parish museum of sacred art at Torgnon is housed in the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, which adjoins the parish church of San Martino in the main village of Mongnod. It holds the community’s sacred art, largely wooden sculptures.
Among the oldest pieces are a rare Christ at the Column from the mid-14th century and a 14th-century Holy Bishop accompanied by two altar servers, probably part of the group that decorated the high altar of the church in the 14th and 15th centuries. A damaged Saint James from the mid-15th century has been linked to the hand of a sculptor who was also active in other places in the Aosta Valley.
The most precious works are three sculptures from the early 16th century, a Madonna and Child with Saints James and Martin, the church’s patrons. They most likely come from a winged altarpiece and are of German school, probably from the workshop of Jorg Lederer.
