About the museum
The Museo Retico opened in 2003 in Sanzeno, in the heart of the Val di Non, and is run by the Autonomous Province of Trento. The building, in a contemporary style with large areas of exposed concrete, is the work of the Trentino architect Sergio Giovanazzi and engages with the interior display.
The exhibition route runs chronologically in a spiral, from the basement to the ground floor, and tells the story of the settlement of the valley from the Stone Age to the early Middle Ages. Ample space is given to the Rhaetians, who inhabited the area from the late 7th century BC to the 1st century BC, with everyday objects, tools, cult items and grave goods, and to the periods of Roman influence.
The visit ends with the theme of the martyrdom of the Anaunian Martyrs and with early medieval burials. The museum stands at the start of the nature walk that leads to the sanctuary of San Romedio.
