About the museum

The Museo Ginori tells the story of the Manifattura di Doccia, founded in 1737 by the Marquis Carlo Ginori in Sesto Fiorentino and considered the oldest porcelain manufactory still active in Italy. The origins of the museum go back to the mid-18th century, when a gallery in the Villa di Doccia was set aside for the models and masterpieces produced by the factory; for almost three centuries it was a company museum linked to the life of the manufactory and of the local area.

In 1965 the museum moved to the building designed specially for it by Pier Niccolò Berardi and Fabio Rossi, on viale Pratese. After the manufacturing crisis and corporate upheavals, the collection was declared to be of exceptional historical, artistic and archival interest, and in 2017 the State bought the museum. Today it is run by the Fondazione Museo Archivio Richard Ginori della Manifattura di Doccia.

The collection comprises nearly 10,000 porcelain and majolica objects dating from 1737 to 1990, sculptural models, documents and drawings, two libraries and a photographic archive, with works documenting three centuries of taste and collecting, from Baroque models to the creations of Gio Ponti. While it awaits reopening, the museum organises temporary exhibitions in other venues in Italy and abroad.
